Women’s Empowerment Program Approved as Oceans Decade Action

The World Maritime University (UMM) research and capacity building program on Empowering Women for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Women’s Empowerment Program) was endorsed as an action of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade). The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) announced the approval on World Oceans Day, June 8, 2021.

The UMM Empowering Women program is generously sponsored by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), with additional support from the Nippon Foundation, and is delivered by a multidisciplinary team from the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute. The program will strengthen the capacity to explore and promote women’s empowerment and gender equality in the conduct of ocean science and in science-dependent governance systems. The research results will identify key barriers and good practices contributing to a proposed strategy and action plan to help provide equal opportunities for full participation and leadership for women at all levels of ocean science under of the Ocean Decade. The program will strengthen on-going collaborations with partners, including intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies, research institutes, universities and individuals, to deliver substantive research results contributing to transformative actions.

Regarding the endorsement, Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, President of the UMM, said: “The Ocean Decade offers a golden opportunity to achieve gender equality in ocean science. I firmly believe that through a series of initiatives, the Empowering Women Program, implemented by the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute, will strengthen the capacity to explore and promote women’s empowerment and gender equality in the conduct of ocean science, as well as in science-dependent governance systems. The program is committed to contributing to transformative actions to empower women from all walks of life for the Ocean Decade. We could not be happier that the importance of this program has been duly recognized by IOC-UNESCO as an official action of the Oceans Decade. “

The approval of the IOC and UNESCO Decade Program of Action to the Empowerment of Women program is an important step in the participation of the UMM in the Ocean Decade and reinforces the substantial efforts of the University to promote gender equality in line with Goal 5 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He recognizes that WMU’s Empowering Women program will play a central role in supporting the mission of the United Nations. Ocean Decade to Catalyze Transformative Oceanographic Solutions for Sustainable Development. By advancing the participation of women in ocean science at all levels, the program supports the achievement of the Oceans Decade vision by advocating for “the people we need for the ocean we want”.
