The charter aims to boost hiring as it works to fill 3,000 positions

Charter Communications rolled out a new tool to help match potential employees with the right role, with the goal of streamlining the hiring process and gaining an edge in what one executive called a tight job market.

The company said in a recent press release that it is currently working to fill around 3,000 positions, including retail, sales, customer service and field technician positions. This figure also includes positions related to the Charter’s Digital Rural Opportunity Fund (RDOF) projects.

Seth Feit, vice president of the talent group at Charter, told Fierce that number wasn’t necessarily anything out of the ordinary, even with RDOF roles factored in, saying that “we have a lot of open positions on on a fairly regular basis. What is unique about his current situation is actually the job market itself, he said.

“Our applicant flow is lower than last year this time around,” he said, noting that Charter continued to hire at a steady pace even during the pandemic. “We lost about 21% of our website views and about 11% less than applicants applying for a job. So for me the job market is tighter than before. “

Feit said Charter’s stance reflects a national trend. Indeed, an employment report released by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics earlier this month showed that the economy added 266,000 non-farm workers in April, a sharp drop from the gains of 770,000 in March and 536,000 in February. The government noted that growth was being fueled by hiring in the leisure and hospitality markets, as well as “other services” and education for local communities, with retailing declining and construction. unchanged.

The executive said Charter’s $ 18 minimum wage gave it a head start, especially in rural markets. And Feit said he’s optimistic that the company’s planned increase to a low of $ 20 next year will provide a similar boost in urban markets, so wage constraints are less of a factor. hiring.

But Charter recently took another step towards hiring juice with the rollout of “Spectrum Fit Finder,” a job search tool designed to help connect employees with the positions they are looking for and maybe even some they hadn’t thought of.

“It’s twinning,” he explained. “With the job market as tight as it was, it was a way to maximize the interest of job seekers and better align them with roles that match their personality and perceived skills,” what they’re good at and what they love to do. “

Feit said Charter initially tested the system internally with around 2,600 employees to get feedback on how the process worked. He added that the first results of its public deployment have been positive.

“Early data shows we’re making people stay on our website longer,” he said, adding that “the average person who clicks Fit Finder is clicking on more than one job.” In the short time since its public launch, Feit said more than 700 people have completed the Fit Finder assessment, with the tool having generated nearly 1,500 clicks.

“We are very satisfied with the first results,” he concluded.
