Aligarh: A distinguished academician, Professor Shahid Farooq, has died in Aligarh. He retired in 2019 after teaching for nearly four decades.

Professor Farooq was appointed Lecturer in the Department of Geology in 1985 and was promoted to Professor. He was passionate about science, who applied his curiosity to understand new things through observation and investigation.

He was deeply loved by his students for whom he developed and maintained a website,, through which geology students and enthusiasts could access study notes, documentary resources and other valuable research documents.

Professor Farooq is a dedicated promoter of science and has worked tirelessly to conduct educational awareness programs on science and technology for students from disadvantaged backgrounds under the auspices of the Center for the Promotion of Science.

He has received numerous awards and scholarships, including the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun scholarship in which his research was funded by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.

Professor Farooq has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Science Reporter, Current Science, Indian Journal of Earth Sciences, Journal of the Geological Survey of India, Journal of the Indian Society of Remote Sensing and Journal of Environmental Research and Development, among others.

The deceased’s wife, Professor Syeda Nuzhat Zeba, is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at AMU.
