While there was no major update on the investigation on Friday, Public Information Officer Josh Taylor of the North Port Police Department spoke briefly to reporters to answer questions about the case In progress.

He said, however, that the police were making progress with the investigation and that they had received a “huge” amount of tips.

According to Taylor, more than a thousand tips have reached the department regarding the Petito investigation.

“That can be anything, since“ that van was in that place, at that gas station, at that time. ”And once that solidifies, I think it’s just one more piece in our timeline, ”Taylor explained.“ So there has certainly been some progress over the last 24 hours and – I don’t know if we’re at the point where we’ve solved it by any means, but the goal right now is to bring Gabby home and that is what we will continue to promote.

“The vast majority of them are not useful,” he admitted. “But it’s these nuggets, these little bits in there that could be someone who – obviously this vehicle drove a few thousand miles back here to North Port. He didn’t do it with just one tank of gas.

Taylor was also asked on Friday about any potential ground grid research in the west, particularly in Teton County, Wyoming. Petito’s last known location was Grand Teton National Park, officials said.

“Certainly the North Port Police Department is not going over there to do a ground search, it just doesn’t make sense,” Taylor said. “By working with people, I can’t even necessarily confirm what those authorities are doing there. We work closely with the Tampa FBI and they work with the Denver area FBI so that may or may not happen. Taylor said he spoke with Petito’s father, Joseph Petito, and felt for the family. Gabby Petito has been officially missing since September 11, but her last known contact with family members was in late August, when she was on a trip across the country with her fiance Brian Laundrie.

Laundrie, now a person of interest, returned home alone in the van the couple were traveling with on September 1 and retained the services of a lawyer, police said. Petito’s family publicly called on Laundrie’s family this week to release any information they may have about Gabby Petito’s location. “They are tortured right now by the potential of someone having information and not relaying it,” Taylor said. “It’s just awful. And by talking with him, you get a feel for what a man is going through looking for answers. “
