Catch up on our reports on faculty members who have been awarded the 2021-22 Chancellor’s Scholarships for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, awarded in collaboration with university leadership; and professors named UC Davis Public Scholarship 2021-22 Fellows by the Office of Public Scholarship and Engagement.

Chancellor’s scholarships for DCI

In the second year of this program, Chancellor Gary S. May and the university leadership selected five fellows, four from the University Senate and one from the University Federation. Each scholarship recipient received $ 5,000 in academic enrichment funds.

Eligibility extends to any member of the Academic Senate or Academic Federation of any UC Davis school or college, in any discipline, at any level, who has demonstrated a consistent commitment to reducing opportunities for under-represented students and / or students from underserved communities. Eligible professors will have spent a significant amount of time in recruitment, academic advancement and / or retention efforts.

Here are the scholarship holders for 2021-2022, with quotes prepared by the university management:

  • Claire EB Canon, Assistant Professor, Department of Human Ecology, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (University Senate) – She has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to promoting justice, equity, diversity and inclusion efforts in her department, college and across the university. Her social justice work extends beyond work for institutional change to her teaching, mentoring and service; She also directs research on environmental exposures and their consequences on health in minority communities. In addition, Professor Cannon sits on committees that help increase equity, diversity and inclusion of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. She is a leader in promoting the principles of justice and belonging and has demonstrated a deep commitment to serving a diverse student body through her mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Elva Diaz, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine (University Senate) – She has an exceptional track record in reducing the gap in opportunity for Under-Represented Minority (URM) students by working on recruitment, academic advancement and retention. She has implemented several initiatives aimed at fostering a diverse, inclusive and equitable community for faculty and students. She is the chair of the I-DARE (Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism and Equity) working group of the Department of Pharmacology. Professor Diaz has long been committed to increasing the number of students from diverse backgrounds who pursue careers in biomedical research. She has been actively involved in programs that help URM undergraduate and graduate students develop skills for successful careers in biomedical research.
  • Aldrin V. Gomes, professor, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, College of Biological Sciences; and Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, Faculty of Medicine (Academic Senate) – He has demonstrated a major commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. It has created a wealth of knowledge on best practices for improving undergraduate and graduate education for underrepresented, disabled and low socioeconomic status students. He is the Principal Investigator of the Maximizing Access to Research Careers program to increase the number of talented under-represented, disadvantaged and disabled undergraduates who become leaders in biomedical and behavioral research. He is also a principal investigator for the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development program, which identifies and trains under-represented graduate students to be the next generation of research leaders and innovators in biomedical and behavioral sciences.
  • Candice Price, Assistant Assistant Professor, Department of Molecular Biosciences, School of Veterinary Medicine (University Federation) – She has made major contributions to address the diversity, equity and inclusion gaps that have persistently persisted in biomedical research. His research on the consumption of sugary drinks has shown differences in the risk factors associated with insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. She helped uncover the mechanisms behind the development of cardiometabolic diseases and addressed health disparities related to added sugar consumption and psychosocial factors in African American women. Professor Price has also been dedicated to increasing the recruitment and retention of people from underrepresented minorities and disadvantaged backgrounds into biomedical careers by providing mentorship and research opportunities.
  • Cindy Rubio Gonzalez, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science, College of Engineering (University Senate) – She is well known for her work in troubleshooting software related to error handling and has made a major contribution to the software quality research community. Her research has had an impressive scientific and practical impact and she has received accolades for her research and outstanding contributions to diversity. She has provided outstanding service to UC Davis in terms of college community service, intramural service and promoting diversity. She has also represented UC Davis before the Hispanic US Congressional Caucus and is an active and dedicated promoter of women and URM in STEM. She is also a professorial assistant to the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion at the College of Engineering.

This is the second annual cohort of the Public scholarship program, established last year by the Public scholarship and engagement office. Each of the nine scholarship recipients received $ 1,000 in academic enrichment funds.

The program supports faculty members in the development of new publicly committed research or scholarships, including, but not limited to, developing relationships with community partners, identifying ways to mainstream scholarship to politics, requesting funding or extramural awards, and writing or presenting their research to a wide audience.
