Online daters should be aware of scams and fake profiles

SALINAS, Calif. (KION) In modern, busy lives, online dating apps like bumble and tinder have grown in popularity over the years, but there are a few tips for those who may be rusty or new to the game. met.

“Over 30% of Americans use dating apps, so it’s very popular, and let’s face it – during Covid – it was the only way to meet people,” said Kim Von Berg, relationship expert at the central coast.

OK Cupid has also seen an increase in activity – and says that if there had ever been a stigma attached to online dating, those days are gone.

“Got more questions now if you’re single and not on an app your friends are asking, what’s wrong with you?” Says Melissa Hobley, Marketing Director at OkCupid.

But relationship experts are hoping there is more awareness that things could go wrong or that people are someone other than what they say they are.

This is similar to the convicted sex offender from North Carolina who was found and arrested in Santa Cruz after failing to report his change of address and dating a woman he met online.

These are the situations that experts say people should do everything possible to avoid.

“There is that percent that is dangerous. There are the crooks who have actually increased,” says Von Berg.

Von Berg helps Central Coast lovers and says there are things to watch out for, like people who seem too good to be true.

“They give you a name, especially a last name, you want to google, you want to verify them. You really want to know if they are what they tell you,” says Von Berg.

It is also recommended that you do not disclose personal information such as cell phone numbers or personal email addresses. Instead, set up a Google voice number and a separate email address specifically for online dating.

Once you are ready to meet, it is recommended that you meet in a public place to be as safe as possible.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your family or friends know where you are by sharing your location and photos of who you will be.
