Text messaging is a convenient communication tool. It allows you to receive notes from people and institutions, allowing you to get information. You can use SMS to talk to friends and family, get utility and banking updates, and even secure your accounts.
However, crooks and spammers can also use this technology to try and steal your hard earned money. There are also instances where unwanted people like rejected suitors and toxic friends use this to disrupt your mental well-being.
So, to help you protect yourself from them, here are five ways to block junk text on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
It is an effective way to block contacts or numbers that repeatedly text you. You can save the details of the person or number you want to block in the People app, and then use its features to prevent them from sending you messages.
Once you’ve saved the person’s details to your phone, here’s what you need to do.
- Find their entry in your Samsung Contacts app.
- Open the contact card.
- Press on Following in the lower right corner.
- To select Block contact.
- Confirm that you want to block the contact.
Once done, you will no longer receive calls or messages from that contact and any associated numbers. So if the person or institution you want to block has multiple numbers, you can save them all in one entry and prevent them from reaching out in one move.
2. Block from the Messages application
While you can prevent saved numbers from sending messages through the Contacts app preemptively, it is more difficult to do for spam messages from unknown numbers. However, you can still prevent these numbers from texting you through the Samsung Messages app.
To do this, you need to open the app and find the offending message.
- Open the spam message in the Messages app.
- If the spam text contains only one message, you will see the Block number option near the top.
- Tap on it and a confirmation window will appear.
- If you want to delete the message, be sure to press the Delete the conversation option.
- Finally, select To block.
This blocks the number on your phone, ensuring that you will no longer receive messages from them. However, if the sender has sent multiple SMS to your number, you will need to block them from the settings menu.
- Open spam messages in the Messages app.
- Press the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
- To choose Block number.
- To delete the conversation, press the Delete the conversation option.
- Faucet To block.
Once done, the phone will intercept and block any text messages that the number associated with this conversation will send.
How to find blocked messages
Even if you’ve blocked someone, there may be times when you want to see the messages they’ve sent you. This is especially true if you’ve blocked a particularly toxic parent but need to check back every now and then to see if they’ve sent a useful message.
To do this, you need to go back to the Messages app.
- On the main screen, press the Settings menu.
- Faucet Settings.
- To choose Block numbers and spam.
- Faucet Blocked messages.
If your Samsung phone has blocked a message, you should see it here.
3. Automatically block spam calls and messages
If you don’t want to deal with spam manually, you can use Samsung’s Messages app to do it for you. The app uses Hiya, an advanced spam protection engine, to identify and block unwanted calls. Although it is enabled by default to detect these unwanted messages and calls, you can use the feature to block them completely.
Here is what you need to do:
- On the main screen of the Messages app, tap the Settings icon in the upper right corner.
- To choose Settings.
- Press on Block numbers and spam.
- To select Caller ID and spam protection.
- In the submenu, press the Block unwanted and fraudulent calls slide.
- You can choose between Block all spam and fraudulent calls Where Only block high-risk fraudulent calls.
The first option will block all possible unwanted and fraudulent calls, but it also tends to intercept legitimate calls from providers. The latter option will most likely allow calls from institutions, like your bank’s, but it can also allow non-threatening but annoying spam calls to pass through.
4. Use a third-party application
Samsung’s integrated solutions are quite robust, especially since they partnered with Hiya, the first to create a caller ID and spam blocker app for mobile. They have partnered since 2016 to provide Smart Call, a network-based spam solution to stop those unwanted calls.
But if you are not satisfied with the performance of spam and scam blocker, there are other third party solutions that you can use as well. There are several options in the Google Play Store, including established apps like Truecaller, Spam Blocker for Android (formerly Key Messages) or Call & SMS Blocker (formerly AntiNuisance).
These popular apps have millions of downloads and have many other great features like call recording, contact backup, camera search, etc. All are free and offer in-app purchases for additional features.
5. Contact your supplier
If a number still find ways to introduce spam into your messages despite all of the above safeguards, the nuclear option is to report it to your carrier. This way, they can use the protections of their network to directly block the number.
When the network provider marks the number as spam, then they can find ways to block it completely or even contact law enforcement if the number poses a serious threat.
Block unwanted messages on your Galaxy device
If you are constantly bombarded with scams and spam emails, you can use the tools above to prevent them from entering your inbox. They are also useful if you have a specific toxic contact who continues to send you messages that are harming your sanity.
Don’t be afraid to remove unknown and unwanted numbers from your life. Now you can do it more efficiently with all the tools and methods provided above.
